On May 15, 2018, Direct Call Solutions, in partnership with Texas Nexus Business Group, launched its first community outreach initiative – selecting a junior high school student from San Antonio’s Martin Luther King Academy to visit company headquarters and receive mentoring and encouragement from executive leaders.
Company leaders met Christian Green-Ortiz, age 15, while at a speaking engagement at his school. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Green-Ortiz stated that he wanted to be a businessman. Andrew Barlowe, Chief Marketing Officer for Direct Call Solutions, selected Green-Ortiz to become the company’s first outreach ambassador after learning about his background.
Green-Ortiz was his mother’s primary caregiver after she suffered a stroke and became paralyzed on the left side of her body. To make matters even more difficult, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. However, Barlowe was impressed with Green-Ortiz’s resilient spirit, despite overwhelming life obstacles.
The primary goal of Direct Call Solutions’ Community Outreach Program is to empower underprivileged youth through mentorship and educational assistance. It is our firm belief that, as business leaders, we give back to the community by investing in today’s youth. We encourage the participation and support of other local businesses and non-profit organizations to supplement these efforts.
Pablo Mendoza, CEO of Direct Call Solutions, spoke with Green-Ortiz and gave him words of encouragement.
“You can do whatever you set your mind to do,” Mendoza told the student.
Mendoza drew upon his family’s immigrant heritage to emphasize the importance of hard work and dedication.
“No hay mal que por bien no venga,” Mendoza said. There is no bad thing through which some good doesn’t come.
Additionally, Green-Ortiz received a new pair of Jordan shoes and was treated to a catered lunch ceremony at the headquarters for the Texas Nexus Business Group. There, Green-Ortiz had the opportunity to read aloud an essay that he wrote on why he wants to become a businessman.
“I pick business because in a business you can help people out and you can support your family financially,” Green-Ortiz read. “It can be easy money. The reason why I say it is easy money is because anyone can open a business. But, it takes hope and commitment. Anyone can be financially stable, but you just got to put your mind to it.”
It was a touching moment for everyone involved in the outreach program and a positive indicator that a little encouragement can go a long way in motivating these students to achieve excellence, both academically and in their personal lives.
Direct Call Solutions looks forward to continuing these outreach efforts to impact deserving students throughout the area.
